I'm considering the area for buying my first home because it's close to child's charter school and affordable for me....so I don't care about the school quality.

But wondering about crime, gangs, parks, safety? I know petty crime is everywhere but trying to avoid the higher crime areas. I drove through there a few times and although some streets seem peaceful, the surrounding area appears to be mostly strip malls and shopping centers...but I haven't quite gotten my bearings there yet. Not super walkable from what I could see. But again..not fully familiar with the area yet enough to really know.

I'm a single mom with a 7-year-old and teen who likes to use trimet and bikes a lot..so I think about him and his safety at bus stops in that area and safety walking home at night from a bus, should he get a job this summer.

Looked at a house off San Rafael and 112th recently and it seemed nice but then again it was 11 am in the morning and everything seems quiet then!

Thanks everyone....

Crime is everywhere. I would consider a few things, and look into them, and if it feels right.......sometikes, it's just a matter if how involved your abk e to be. Some single parents have no choice but to use a latchkey program, or have their child home for a few hours before mom or dad gets home. It's not Heathrow, that's for sure, but it's not terrible either. Yes, there are low income apartments, but not every low income family, is a bad family. Therevare also flag lits, which give alot of privacy and security, if you can find a home for rent on a flag lot, take it, considering your neighbors are ok folks. There are alot of programs the county offer for s choolbkids, to keep them involved. I'd look into that stuff. It's not the wild west either.b

Gateway is a high crime area just 10 blocks away. https://www.portlandmaps.com/detail/...T/R249651_did/

I was trying to use the crime mapper, but they changed format and now you have to login.

I personally believe that the RE/Chamber of commerce/come to Portland it's grand here industry are in cahoots to stop the crime mapper. Scares away prospective buyers.

For instance you can only get a date range of 1 month. Where as you used to be able to get 2 or 3 years. One month makes it look like we don't have much crime.

That neighborhood seemes "pretty good" for the most part.

NE 102nd Ave & NE Weidler St 97220 Portland, OR Neighborhood Profile

Now these jerks want you to subscribe also so they can fill your inbox with junk and show you a bunch of ads for things you'll never buy.

I was disappointed by that as well. So I can't look at that those specific sets of blocks. Definitely calls for driving around the neighborhood to see what the OP things.

That said, I wouldn't let the proximity to Gateway be a non-starter. I lived just on the other side of 122nd for several years, and pass within 10 blocks of that intersection every day, and on the whole that area is working class and fairly "quiet" in terms of who lives there. But yes, there is some vagrancy along Halsey in particular and 122nd between the Goodwill and Winco. Even get some homeless camping out there.

Provided there's not noise off the rail line / or the 205/84 interchange (should be far enough away for it to be not more than a hum) I'd consider it as viable. Probably still some rough edges, but solid on the whole, and I do think that's a pocket that "c"ould gentrify significantly if the city grows, and particularly if the city keeps pushing money into Gateway as a commercial destination.

The Gateway Kaiser is a nice primary care facility as well, other than that they don't offer a full range of services. A few decent places to dine nearby, and the parks are okay (Luby, Knott).

Parkrose Heights is fine as long as you're not going to miss having sidewalks in your neighborhood for the most part. It's fairly quiet(in a good way) and it's really not that far to the rest of NE Portland(you can head down Halsey and you're in the Hollywood District in not very long).

Most of the big boulevards in NE Portland or SE Portland a little furhter out are high crime areas--because that's where there's opportunities to commit crimes and that's where kind of low rent people are going to walk around--but the neighborhoods adjacent to them can actually be fine middle class/working class areas.

The Gateway area is going to blow up soon. It's the most untapped part of Portland nobody is talking about. Its relatively closeness to downtown (about a 9min drive on the freeway) It's little changes that are happening that will eventually transform Gateway to the next big area. It might not be tomorrow but I'll say easily within 5 years a lot of changes will be coming that have Gateway in a boom.

It's so crazy the value and size of homes you can buy around gateway (Maywood park, Hazelwood, etc). What gets me is the proximity from the gateway freeway entrance to downtown is literally about a 9 min drive to downtown (no rush hour). It's just a matter of time this pocket of Portland gets developed to its full potential
