This is my first winter in PDX --- and I LOVE the city but not really enjoying this weather. Does anyone know of anywhere sunny you can drive to and back in one day? Or of any favorite, interesting, quirky one-day-trips even if it still involves rainy weather?

I really like going to the fish hatchery at Bonneville dam/Cascade Locks as a day trip. I'm not enjoying this weather either--it's been unseasonably cold and the storm today is a very bad one. Winter will not be like this the entire time--this isn't normal. It may rain, but not like this all the time!!

This probably sounds dumb but I heard that Portland gets lots of rain but no thunderstorms. Is that correct?

In all honesty, it seems that even if it's not raining, it's raining from the way it affects people there. And yes, I would love to see the coast in your weather.

You can often get a respite from the rain in Portland by driving east of the Cascade mountain range into the high desert area in the eastern portion of the state. The John Day Fossil Bed National Monument, for instance, has some good hiking and it could be visited in a long day trip. Of course, you may want to stick to I-84 when traveling east because some of the smaller roads through the mountains may not be passible due to snow in the winter.

Right now we're having a HUGE winter storm with so much rain it might flood, 90 MPH winds, at the coast, etc. It's not average PNW rain--that was my comment. It will definitely be gray and there will be rain and some people will feel it's that way all the time (even if it isn't) but it will NOT rain like this all winter--it's usually a light rain. I don't even want to leave my home in this kind of rain and the rain here doesn't normally bother me. The rain is coming from all directions and you can't hide. And good luck using an umbrella with the wind!

Goozer,

I was thinking about the same general region. I am just looking at google maps. How about the eastern slopes of Mt. Hood? Or White River Falls State Park? I like to hike in the winter sometimes here in Colorado when there is snow in the Mtns. I was thinking of some possible good places near Mt. Hood or others area that might be scenic with frozen lakes, etc...

Here is the kind of thing I had in mind. I like to see and photograph winter scenes like this (RMNP):
