We are a young couple looking to buy a house in the under 250,000 range. What areas of Portland would you recommend? We also would like to be in a walkable area.

A few of the more affordable areas with stuff to walk to are Foster-Powell, Montavilla, St. John's and Kenton. You might take a look at the Portland Bridges website, which has a description of all the different neighborhoods.

The most expensive neighborhoods seem to be the Pearl, NW, and parts of Laurelhurst and Eastmoreland.

Also the OP needs to define whether they are looking in Portland proper or the entire Portland Metro Area.

We prefer Portland proper. We live in California right now. How pleasant is Pleasant Valley? I have heard bad things about St. Johns and Lents.

St Johns is fine, just a bit isolated feeling, Lents is getting better, but that price tag will put you in the Montavilla area and the area just west of Rock Butte, which are both great areas. I have a buddy that lives over near Rock Butte and loves it. The area is nice, the homes are well priced, and it is extremely easy to get to most places in the city and downtown is a quick 10 minute drive from there.

I can't find any information about a Rock Butte.

Are schools a consideration?

I'd say that if you're wanting a "city" feel, you're probably going to be looking at condos rather than houses. Those can be had for that price. Houses, you're more likely to be looking at something more suburban, and so less walkable. And the ones in that range that are nearer into town, aren't necessarily going to be great houses.

Pleasant Valley isn't necessarily the greatest, but can be okay - but walkable, it's not. Anything east of I-205 you'd probably want to check out. It's not the best area. And again, not really anything I'd call walkable.

You can check crime stats and all other stats by plugging any addresses you have into PortlandMaps.

Are schools a consideration?
