Hi everybody! Can anyone tell me what the average rent of a 2 bedroom, 2 bathroom apartment/condo/townhouse would be? This is what I am looking for as I search for a place to live in the Portland area. I would be willing to live in a nearby suburb, but would prefer Portland. Can anybody help me with these prices? Thank you everyone! I appreciate all your help!

I'd say anywhere between $800 and $1300. Too many variables. I suggest you look in Craig's List. Narrow your search to Multnomah County.

I can only speak for my neighborhood which is near Hawthorne Blvd. I know that one bedroom apartments go for $950 to $1200. When I walk around my neighborhood and see "for rent" signs I always read them. I haven't seen many two bedroom apartments for rent but I know the one accross the street from me, two bedroom one bath, goes for $1300.

I pay $740 for a very small one bedroom apartment. That is unusually low rent for the area. I found it by just scouring the neighborhood. The best apartments don't advertise; they put out a sign and within a day they are gone. I know this isn't a feasible way for someone to find a place while living out of town but it's a method to think about in the future.

Also, as in jobs, networking helps. People would kill to rent from my landlord. I knew him from living accross the street from where I used to live. When something became available in his building I literally took the sign down and knocked on his door. Besides the fact that he knew me from accross the street, another tenant in his building with whom I was friends, vouched for me as did my employer.

The closer you move to downtown, the more expensive. By expensive I mean over $1000 for a 2BR. There are trendy neighborhoods right outside the city (SE Portland/Johns Landing) that are expensive too. What are your criteria for the neighborhood you want to be in?

Well, living downtown would of course be great. But I assumed it would be above my price range. I am looking for a nice 1br or 2br in the 800 range. As long as it is a safe neighborhood I will be satisfied. : )

A one bedroom may be possible but typically you would probably not be able to be close-in (near downtown) in the more safe, convenient and walkable neighborhoods unless you uncovered a great bargain. A two bedroom for that price: you will be looking in the suburbs.

Right around Burnside between 12th and 30th there are a lot of apartments in the $600-800 range. I enjoyed living in the area for the two years I was there. The biggest issue I had was patrons of the nearby Thai place blocked my car in frequently. Wasn't usually a problem until I had to make an run to the Emergency room.

Yup, you need to start searching the burbs for the kind of price you want

Are there any nice 1 BR's for 800 or so? Will I be sacrificing my "Portland experience" if I take a place in the burbs to save money? What do you guys think? Are the more expensive places worth it?

It depends what you're interested in and the life you'd like to have. When Portland: The Concept is portrayed in the national media (I mean you, New York Times), it's really the close-in city, rather than the suburbs they're writing about. Me, I'd go for location over space every time.
