I could be getting tranfered to the Portland area very soon. Where I work will be close to the airport. My wife and I were wondering were some good and safe area are to live in withing 30 minutes of the airport. We are not into the night life so a smaller community would work just fine for us. Thanks for any help you may have for us.

Plenty of options within 30 minutes of the airport, depending on the time of day you are driving, and the direction you are heading...

I would suggest looking for something that doesnt create a commute across a River.

You could also find decent neighborhoods less than 30 minutes from the airport, again, just depends which direction you want to go.

The wind whistles through the Columbia River Gorge in the winter. Avoid living in that wind tunnel as it can suck the heat out of a home.

Wood Village
North side of the city of Gresham
North of US26, and south of I-84 out east of NE 181st, maybe east even east of NE 200th.

this is all 'burb country, car is king, and daily survival depends on car.

For cheaper property taxes, go with a longer commute drive on I-205 down into Clackamas County- Clackamas, Happy Valley, Oregon City, West Linn, and so forth. Big shopping center down there is Clackamas Town Center. Note: light rail MAX service from Clackamas Town Center up to Gateway Transit center, switch over to Red line MAX, which will take you right to PDX airport. (just under 30 minutes rail time from Clackamas to PDX)

There is also the Mr. Tabor neighborhood and North Mt. Tabor neighborhoods, if you can afford it.

Are you planning to buy or rent when you arrive?

Maywood Park is a small incorporated city within Portland that is small, cozy, and safe. It would be a 10 minute drive to the airport and you wouldn't even need the freeway. Prescott cuts through to 82nd and Airport Way exit is a few blocks north. It's very homey and the type where the neighbors all know each other.

Far east Gresham. Super peaceful, beautiful views of Larch Mountain, Mt. Hood etc., tree farms and critters, take your pick of developed neighborhoods or more rural (semi-rural really) homes.

25 mins. to the airport, and you can take Sandy Blvd or Airport Blvd. over to the airport if the freeway's screwed up.

I should qualify the above. "Far East Gresham" to me is anything east of 282nd (282nd is Troutdale Rd north of Division Ave), and north of Orient/Bluff Rd.

Zip Code 97080 (not 97030)

From Maywood Park you could walk to the Parkrose Transit Center and ride the light rail to the airport.

I'd recommend North Portland. I live at Daybreak Cohousing (www.daybreakcohousing.org). It is a 10 minute walk to the Yellow Max and then you can transfer to the Red Max that takes you directly to the airport. Easily within 30 minutes and no car to park. Good public transportation, good shops and restaurants and very close to downtown. Yeah, North Portland!
