Would you support a new amendment to the constitution that made it so you had to be more then just born in the U.S to be given citizenship? but had to at least have one parent that is a legal U.S citizen to be given citizenship at birth? Should a kid born here from Canadian parents that lived near the border with no ties to the U.S be given citizenship just because the U.S. hospital was closest to where they live?

I would ABSOLUTELY support such an amendment. That would be no different than every other country on this Earth. How many countries do you know of like ours where a woman is allowed to plop her fetus and presto, the fetus a citizen of that country?

I heard once on NPR that in countries like malaysia, that guest workers are deported immediately when they find out that the female guest worker is pregnant. that's an extreme, but truth is that they don't put up with freeloaders in most countries.

YES, and I am the US born son of a naturalized citizen. Anchor babies trivialize US citizenship and make a mockery of this country.

While an interesting idea, there is just too much mischief going on in this country right now. The last thing I want to see, in this highly politicized and polarized climate, is anyone from either party monkeying about with the amendment process. Who knows what silliness we'd end up with.

While I would like to see an amendment that does this, I do agree that we are in a very strange place. our politicians are doing wacky things and I would hate for them to be in charge of something like this.

More like chicanery.

This isn;t surprizing given that the Americas until recent times needed labor and had a lot of vacant land. We had a need to be met by immigration and in much of the Americas there has been a tradition of open borders. Until the beginning of the 20th century if you wanted to immagrate you were in if you passed muster at entry points like Ellis Island.American companies sent agents to Europe to get people to come to America and work in their mines, factories and farms.
