Gloria and Emilio Estefan have come under fire with members of their local community for plans to host an event at their home that is expected to bring in millions for the Democratic Party.
But don’t expect this to be a local community event, unless of course residents want to fork over a down-payment on a house or a year’s college tuition. Tickets to the exclusive Democratic National Committee fundraiser are a whopping $30,400-a-couple.

And many of her Cuban-American neighbors are up in arms over the fundraiser, which is expected to bring in $2.5M for the DNC. The hefty sum seems particularly disturbing to members of the traditionally-Republican community, especially as the Dems and the GOP continue to battle over financial reform to save the country from economic collapse.
"People have been very upset," Ninoska Perez-Castellon, a director of the Cuban Liberty Council told the Florida Sun Sentinel. "It's one thing to have the ear of the president, but what's shocking is that they are doing a fundraiser for Democrats."

Up until this point, the Estefans have claimed to be non-partisan and have spoken out against the Castro regime.

Those right wing Cubans in Miami are a bunch of myopic fossils.

Kudos to the Estefans for being thinking people.

I don't understand your objection. You don't think that they should express their political views and show their political support?

The Cuban community who used to vote Republican as one voice became a mixed bag of Democrats and Republicans when they realized there was no need to submit to the orders of their local community leader told them to vote Republican. "You are Cuban, you vote Republican" is a thing of the past.

So...what changed? Why did they "need to submit to the orders of their local community leaders"?
Or are you just speaking from your bunghole?

What changed? They political orientation of Cuban Americans is simply shifting as the younger generations vote Democrat. As a matter of fact MOST Cuban Americans under 44 voted Democrat. The older Cubans spent their lives supporting republicans hoping they would arrange an attack on Castro's Cuba, but since that never happened, the younger ones decided to vote about Americans issues as opposed to continue voting for purely Cuban issues. After all the younger ones were born in USA.

Big deal. Cubans aren't as Republican as they used to be. This seems like a non-story to me.

Before people flame out, notice that I used the words many, most , and some. I am not saying all.

I think that most of the Cuban Democrats are the are the new arrivals, and/or the ones who have been brought up and educated in a communist regime. Most of the Republican Cubans were directly affected by communism. They are ones who feel they were betrayed by Kennedy with the Bay of Pigs invasion. They lost their homes and businesses just like what the Venezuelans are going through now. They were mostly the ones who came to this country in the 60's and 70's and worked hard for a living. Their kids were educated here, and most prospered and became professionals. They were a group of people who's word and handshake meant something.

The problem with the Cubans started in the 80's. Many of them were already born into communism. Castro also made sure to send all of his psychopaths and criminals. Many of the new arrivals are scammers. They open medical labs and clinics, and scam medicare. The mentality of "don't pay your mortgages anymore", or just rent a place. The eviction process takes 3-4 months. That's a free stay, and then move on to another sucker who will rent to them. No credit anyway. Many start up grow houses. Since Miami became so hot with the hydroponics, they moved it to Naples, and Cape Coral. Many are very flashy, they don't have a pot to **** in, but they buy that bright yellow hummer.

I know that many people criticize Cubans for coming over on rafts, or leaving their soil. "They should overthrow the government", and" it's better to die than to run away from your home" These comments blow me away. The only people in Cuba that are armed are the military and the police. Castro made sure to take everyones weapons away in the late 50's. There are no gun stores, or places to obtain weapons there. Every block has people that are assigned to snitch. If someone is even suspected of conspiracy, they are thrown into a jail, or killed. There are no human rights there. So without weapons and snitches on every block, how can a group logistically overthrow an armed government who will mow you down?

What a show that was. About 60 cops, 30 customs agents, FHP, 2 blackhawks, 1 police chopper, K-9 units, Motor units, Sniper teams, secret service, an Airforce C-17, etc. for a total of 3 hours. And why does it seem that they always visit during rush hours. Those temporary road closures set people back and cause chaos.
