These three poor excuses for guards are instructed to "observe and report" and hence did absolutely nothing as a teenage girl is beaten and robbed right in front of them. Not sure if they would have risked a lawsuit by getting involved, but I'm thinking when it's this close and this brutal, you do SOMETHING besides call it in on a radio like a lazy turd. I wonder how some people sleep at night.

So what do you think, were they right for following instructions not to act and just report, or do you think they were obligated as human beings to do something to help that girl?

They should have stepped in and helped. To stand by and watch this happen is just plain wrong.

Absolutely 100% horrible. I am one that thinks that no matter what the contract said, you would have to step in and do something. And not one of the guards checked the victim after it was over, what the heck are they doing there. It sends a message loud and clear to everyone that they will not stop anything so go ahead.

Security guards are not trained combat troops deployed to a war zone. The security guards are outnumbered, 10-3 by quick, strong, angry young people clearly willing to resort to extreme violence, may be unarmed, are probably untrained to prevail in hand-to-hand combat. Nor are they trained to be first-response rescue personnel when there is an injury. Their procedure manual probably requires that they only call for backup in the event of an incident, and attempt to defuse an incident verbally, which one of them is clearly doing. They are not trained nor screened for quick-thinking nor for bravery. Even as it is, they were lucky they were not attacked themselves. They could be 60-year old retirees, being paid $8 an hour, to do a job which does not include risking their lives. In other words, they are WalMart greeters with yellow vests. They are school crosswalk guards on the night shift.

Basically, they only reason security guards are there is to afford a witnessing presence which is a significant deterrent to most malevolents, and to alert competent back-up in the event rescue or a show of force is needed.

Those security guards are worthless and need to either be fired or assigned to scrape gum off the sidewalk or pick up trash. You break up the fight or you step in and physically protect whoever is being assaulted. You don't have to throw a punch not knowing exactly what is going on but you do have to make an effort.
If they have no training they shouldn't be in that job or their job is one that has no real purpose.

As I said, the purpose of their job is to be a witnessing presence. Most people with criminal intent are unwilling to commit a crime in front of a witness who can be readily found and questioned and provide corroborating identification and evidentiary testimony, hence the purpose for the presence of watchful eyes in public places. The ONLY function of a security guard, is to be a presence where otherwise, misbehavior would go unobserved, undetected, or unreported, and to summon proper response teams in the event of immediate need.

Neither are most 16 year olds. They should have acted on pure human decency. They had no sense of urgency about them, they just stood there like slobs, collecting another easy payday. If that was your daughter on the ground I doubt you'd be as idealistic.
