"Police need reasons to believe a suspect is dangerous before firing a Taser and can't use their stun gun simply because the person is disobeying orders or acting erratically, a federal appeals court in San Francisco ruled Monday."
Good. It's about time. Hopefully these rules will be implemented throughout the rest of the country. Police have too often used Taser guns to subdue suspects where its been unwarranted.
Why am I not surprised this came from the 9th circus court? What's next? Police batons made by Nerf? Guns replaced with water pistols? Plead with the criminal in a soft tone of voice to comply three times before using a harsher tone of voice?
Someone should tell the 9th circus court to go on patrol with the police officers before trying to dictate their actions. While they're with the police, run drug test on those crazy bastiches.

Hello Sailordave,
I understand where you're coming from: police officers perform an absolutely essential and very dangerous job, and are overworked, underpaid, and often under appreciated, but I think that you are wrong on this issue.
Cops already carry guns. Either a situation requires deadly force or it doesn't. Other than their batons, they don't need a weapon of compliance (which is the way that the taser is often used). I've seen video clips of cops using the taser instead of just taking the perp down and cuffing him. It's lazy, sloppy police work. The problem is that non-violent non-felons are actually being killed as a result of this supposed "non-lethal" weapon.
There have been a couple of recent taser deaths in my kneck of the woods (Fort Worth, TX) and both were non-violent offenders. Personally, I think that if police officers insist on the need for a weapon of compliance in addition to their batons they can just use pepper spray. That never killed anybody. The taser is just too dangerous.

What an irrational reaction. What's wrong with having a rule that says Taser guns should only be used on suspects who pose a serious threat? Why is that unreasonable? Or are you only against it because it was the Ninth Circuit Court who made this ruling?

Because in this country, with how erratic a suspect can be because of the huge problem with narcotics and alcohol in the country today, a non threatening situation can become a threatening one very quickly.
A taser is a very dangerous thing. Used in the wrong way, or on the wrong person, it can kill.
No question standards should be set up. Until a non dangerous weapon surfaces for the police thats viable, they should use standards to keep the populace safe.

A good police officer should be able to control a harmless suspect without resorting to his Taser gun. It's clear that the guns are often used unnecessarily.

The Police aren't always right.
How do you feel when a police officer gets gunned down or stabbed because their hands are "tied" by the law
It seems as though officers are made out to be criminals by some on the left instead of the real criminals
