What does happen is if you support a party you get identifed with the good and the bad. Let's say you have a strip joint in your neighborhood and you want it moved yet you frequent it. You are seen as part of the problem.

I wish everyone would register as an Independent so both Republicans and Democrats would not know where they stand with the people. By the way there are little to no Independent candidates because the main stream media will not give them any air time since they too are "in the game". Mpst Independents join one of the two parties for a better chance of getting elected.
Right, I agree here. My main point is that I think most of us can agree on the basics, but the constant "lumping" of everyone to one camp or another just enables arguments to veer off course and never be solved.

For instance, when people want to use a cleaner energy source, maybe so we dont have to depend so heavily on foreign oil (which supports terrorism against our own country), the opposition will often say something like...

"Oh, you are hiding behind some secret agenda to steal my liberty away, you probably voted for Obama and believe in gay marriage. You just want to make me believe in global warming and abortion, You socialist liberal!!! What, do you want to outlaw cigarettes too, take all my guns and raise my taxes?"

Then you just stand there in amazement and wonder who is calling who crazy?

When in reality, I only meant the simple statement of, if we can progress to newer cleaner technology, for no other reason than its the smartest thing to do, thats exactly ALL I meant, but no one wants to examine the principle that was originally brought up since its more fun to debate off topic points that get nobody anywhere.

I'm all for 100% independent voters, but that is definitely a pipe dream. You bring up a good point of the press being in on the game. Its sad how much television and newspapers rules peoples lives over free thinking.

I live my own life as you might expect a conservative would. I live in a heavily republican suburb, go to church every Sunday, am married to my first husband, had 2 kids after we married. We didn't even live together first. We've both always worked, never been on any kind of public assistance, never had an unplanned pregnancy, we have health insurance... but I live by my high moral standards because I want to, not because the govt or anyone else is making me. I support same-sex marriage/civil unions, even though I don't want one myself. I support a woman's right to choose, even though I never had to. I want health care for everyone because it is extremely insensitive not to; it shouldn't depend on your wealth or lack of.
