The governor of Rhode Island vetoed a bill that would have allowed domestic partners to make funeral arrangements for their deceased loved one.

He said the issue should go to the voters. Should matters such as who arranges someone's funeral be left up for a vote?

A person can prepay a funeral, and legally appoint anyone to be their funeral director.

when did people get this idea that all facets of life (and now death apparently) should be voted upon by the masses. why does some Average Joe care who decides the funeral arrangements for Sue Somebody down the block? hey, let's just get rid of the elected officials and leave EVERYTHING up to a vote by the masses.

This goes to the heart of the issue underlying 'gay marriage'. Thousands of persons, men women others who have been estranged from families for whatever various reasons and have found trust, security, friendship and lasting relationship in an other person, seek that simple government authorization for that other person to have the privilege of sharing a life responsibility. And the government, in its ignorance and interference chooses to return an estranged body to the hands from which the estranged sought to escape. Whether a pre planned death or freak accident.

Pathetic bastards.

So the people can vote on this matter but not on the whole healthcare thing? Makes a lot of sense doesn't it?

It should be up to the individuals involved--the state--or society at large--should have no input whatsoever.

Does RI have civil unions?

I would hardly think it appropriate to have a boy/girl friend determining such issues.

Whether or not RI has civil unions should have no bearing...

Why is it not appropriate to have a boy or gilrfriend determine such issues?

When my partner of 30+ years passed away there was no such thing as a civil union in any state, was it not appropriate for me to have made funeral decisions...should it have been left up to his family who had little contact with him for most of those thirty years?

Once you have a certian portion of the public apetio the court time and again over who arranges barail ;the governaqmnt has a interest in passing laws to govern it. Otherwise we see constant court casesw and injunstions being filed where p-eople make no arrangements before their death;which is often. They have the option of elected o0fficals or taking it to the people. There are rules when a issue can be taken to the voters.
