The tape speaks for itself.

Fortunately, the 2 attackers have been caught and will likely get to experience what they claim to dislike so much. If you are of a mind you might encourage your senators to support the Mathew Shepard bill. Where do these hate filled people come from? Why is there so little regard for anyone else?

There are laws on the books already to prosecute violent crimes. "Hate" laws are simply small-minded attempts at further retribution for beliefs which some do not condone. Is "hate" a bad thing? Perhaps. But to start legislating beliefs, and to supposedly prove what is inside the mind of another, is the height of arrogance and delusion.

Physical assault is already against the law, so you want stiffer penalties if the mugger has some bigotry or prejudice against the victim?

Guess we need that type of law for the recent Limbaugh slandering that went on last week. This way, if the person making slanderous comments about Limbaugh hates Republicans or conservatives, the court will doubkle or tripple the fines and punishment.

oh, oh, oh, I have another one. If the tax evader did not pay their taxes because they hate 0bama, or his policies, we can increase the punishment also.

You may be on or something, we can punish the hell out of people, based upon their emotional feelings or opinions about the victim.

A victim is a victim.
Lets not denigrate people further by segregating them based on race, sexual orientation, etc. as if one group of victims should receive preferential treatment over another.

As the others have said, there are already laws to deal.

Wow allydriver spot on!

Everyone in here is spot on!! There is no reason to create special laws that give preferential treatment for an act of violence.

There's nothing that makes beating up a homosexual any more heinous then beating up a heterosexual. Point is beating up someone is wrong regardless of who the victim is. Geez, setting up a law like this just makes it more "profitable" to go around beating heterosexuals, because the penality will be less.

Before I would ever support hate crime legislation, someone needs to explain to me why one person is deserving of greater justice than another person when they have been victimized in exactly the same way.

Lets say 2 brothers living in two different cities go out and on the same night both are beaten. Both end up in the hospital with a broken arm, leg, 4 ribs and jawbone.

Both spend 4 days in ICU with internal bleeding. Both need to have their spleen removed and both need 6 months of intensive therapy before they can return to a semi-normal life.

Both will spend the rest of their lives in pain because of the attacks.

Now one was beaten for the color of his skin. The other was just the victim of a crime of opportunity.

Is someone here going to tell me with a straight face that one criminal should get more punishment than the other considering that the outcome for both of the victims was exactly the same?

Yeah, unanimous sanity. Where are the thought police who have elevated this issue to a national debate?

That is, unless they create laws and enforcement for thought crimes so they can assign a punishment to actual disagreement with the powers accepted position. The race hate crimes is just the beginning, next it will be speculated outcome of political opinion (much like what is already claimed of right wing talk show hosts and how their speech incites violence and hate).
