WASHINGTON (CNN) -- President Obama will place tariffs on imports of some Chinese tires for three years in an effort to curb a surge in exports that has rocked the U.S. tire industry.

The new tariffs will be on passenger car and light truck tires, the White House said in a statement Friday night.

As Paul Harvey used to say, here is 'the rest of the story':

Obama got tough on China. It cost U.S. jobs and raised prices

"In any case, U.S. tire production recovered but didn't surge. Instead, U.S. tire imports from all other countries excluding China rose dramatically, Hufbauer found. In other words, the Chinese tire jobs didn't come to the U.S. -- they went to the next cheapest countries".

Limited success of Chinese tire tariffs shows why Donald Trump's trade prescription may not work

Strange isn't it, how tariffs on Chinese goods were not controversial when Obama was in office?

It was a very targeted tariff and didn't make much of a splash.

What's more interesting is that it didn't have the intended effect of protecting American jobs and it hurt Americans in other ways. In other words, it was a flop and Trump's tariffs will be too.

At some point in a technologically advanced economy, some jobs will leave as production costs become to high to sustain locally and can be performed more efficiently elsewhere.

He said they werent controversial while obama was in office, and thats why I posted this. Can we get some critical references from the media at the time obama enacted this? Seems they waited until they could use this against trump.
And BTW he is doing this partly to hurt china and your articles pretty much agree that tire tariff did that to china.
You people act as if Trump invented tariffs. LBJs chicken tax on pickup trucks is still in effect today and is the reason why toyota nissan and honda all assemble their trucks here some 53 years later.

Looking at google search results reveals in 2009 virtually all media coverage treated this non critically presenting pros and cons but saying it was necessary.
In 2012 there was some criticism because Obama brought it up as an election issue.
In 2016-18 it appears as an example to prove trumps policies as disastrous.
Critics want to bring trump down so badly they dont care if they bring the country with him. Guess I cant change that but Im gonna point it out when I see it.

I'm sure bots praised him for it. He (Obama) actually placed tariffs on several thousand products trying to stem Chin's cheating. Too bad he didn't do a damn thing about them stealing intellectual property.

All we can do is point out the hypocrisy.
