The conviction was unsafe.
When the case was heard in the Netherlands, there were questions raised about the prosecution evidence and it's attempts to like Megrahi with the bombing at Lockerie.
Indeed the UN appointed observer Hans Köchler, himself raised doubts as to the veracity of the prosecution case.
Megrahi lodged a formal appeal against the conviction and that appeal was due to be heard in the coming weeks.
According to his defence counsel, there was clear evidence of a coverup in the original case as put by the prosecution.
