WASHINGTON - The Senate voted Wednesday to require actual fencing along 700 miles of the border with Mexico rather than vehicle barriers and high-tech equipment.
The plan by Sen. Jim DeMint, R-S.C., won approval by a 54-44 vote as the Senate began a second day of debate on a $42.9 billion measure to fund the Department of Homeland Security for the budget year beginning Oct. 1.
Fence? That's an interesting change in events. I recall Janet Napolitano saying "Show me a 50-foot wall, and I’ll show you a 51-foot ladder.”
how stupid does that sound?
there really is no genuine effort to protect the border until you have men with guns policing the border with orders to shoot those who attempt to cross.

There are ways for them to try and get around the fence, of course. But it WILL slow them down. Anything that keeps as many out as possible is a huge step in the right direction.
Janet may not like it, but hopefully she'll be overruled.

What about remote sentry guns controlled online by citizens, they can log in for, say, $5/hr. Might help finace the stimulus also; two birds, one stone.
Instead of wasting trillions on that stupid war they could have walled up our border a long time ago. Finally someone cares about Americans and not about Mexicans wanting to work here illegally!
A fence on the Mexican border is about as useful as a second navel. The only people it will keep out are those who didn't plan to come here anyway.
DeMint is grandstanding for the unwashed rednecks at home who demand action on illegals. It is much easier to build a fence and point at it when asked than it is to actually engage the problem, learn something, and actually work on it.
How does DeMint propose to pay for this fence, BTW?
