In about 4-5 billion years the sun will expand and the Earth will be consumed as the outer layer of the sun reaches the Earth's orbit. True story and a scientific fact.
....the beginning of the end was when Pat Robertson got the bomb... which he then taught James Dobson, Jerry Fallwell and The Vatican how to make them ....then that silly gadfly Robertson used a nuke on Hugo Chavez... Patty always was such a cut up...
....which begat a major conflict between countries in South America and the USA... nukes going off everywhere... and then Fidel Castro opened his fuzzy mouth one time too many about Yankee imperialism and James Dobson nukes him... NeoCons rejoiced
...so then the Vatican jumps in, it being a very good time to have some fun, and they nuke Planned Parenthood...
...at which time the gays and lesbians, who got the nukes from Rev Ted in exchange for some meth and a quickie, decide to nuke Dobson's massive complex in Colorado Springs... which is so near NORAD and the Dept of Homeland Security that the US Government thought it was under attack, so it unleashes thousands of nukes on everyone...
...so then the Russians who are still sore about having 20,000,000 of its people killed by the Nazi's in WW-2 decide to jump in and nuke Germany... which prompts NATO countries Britian and France to nuke Russia back
... and since the Brits are still smarting about losing India to an unarmed man in the late 1940's they start nuking India... who thinks it's being attacked by the Pakistani's, who think they're being nuked by Israel... who think they're being nuked by Iran... and the Mideast goes up in a cloud...
...and the Frenchies, still smarting about losing Vietnam to Ho Chi Minh in 1954 decide to nuke Hanoi... which causes China to defend it's Vietnamese commie pals and go after France for all those old grievances and for overpriced French cuisine and snooty waiters... and then the nukes start going off everywhere in one final spasm of mushroom clouds...
... and then a few hippies in Yucaipa are all that's left to re-populate the earth. Party on Garth... Light up Wayne...

in all seriousness, I think we kill each other off before the sun burns us out. I don't think movies like the road warrior are that far fetched with the way some people seem to value crude.
LOL, Mike you have a gift! Why aren't you writing movies? (Oh, and if you do make this a screenplay, could you add Sarah Palin somewhere? If the world's gonna end I at least I want to see Tina Fey play that role one last time.)

if the world is gonna end? not a question of if, but one of when. the sun is a star, and will eventually burn us to a crisp.

The end of humanity can't be considered to be synonymous with the end of the world since humans have only inhabited the planet for the smallest spec of time when you consider the age of the planet.
Global warming, the earth will still exist. Cyborgs, a purely human problem. Technological destruction, the planet will long outlive any manmade or even machine made structure.
But to answer the question... it is rather arrogant to think that the human species will last the 6 billion of so years before the nova of the sun (which will be the end of the earth) but I suspect that the only thing that will kill off the pesky parasite known as man would be an environmental catastrophe like a collision with a large comet, or biological agent.
But then again, maybe humans are like cockroaches, indestructible.

The earth doesn't need us right now, but we need the earth. I'll play the devils advocate with you though, and say that in less than 4 billion years, if we are still around and don't eradicate ourselves, it is entirely probable that we will be able to spread our seed across the galaxy on planets with younger more stable star systems.
