In 1975 getting laid was a bigger issue for my friends both straight and gay, the idea of getting married wasn't even on the radar. But, smoking pot was almost as important as sex. In 1975 there were a lot of noise about at least decriminalizing pot... so I would have thought that it would have come first.

I do think that there have been many more come out of their closets since that time, however. That isn't funny but your words were.

I think it was like, "Hey, man. Look at those two guys! They must really like each other. If we let them get married we could make off with their stash while they're picking out china."

Based on the thread title, I thought you were going to present a survey or something that actually answered the question.

Kind of misleading, don't you think?

The gay rights movement was just beginning around the mid 70s with the whole Anita Bryant crusades in Miami and Wichita which were among the first places to pass gay rights laws. The movement to legalize marijuana had been going since the 1960s already with organizations like NORML and magazines like High Times. In many states it was effectively decriminalized- head shops were open, pipes and bongs were sold and even if you got caught with a small amount (a "lid" or less) of it, the cops would not haul you to the clinker over it. Of course all that changed when Reagan (thank Gawd he is gone) was elected. So my guessing is that most people thought marijuana would be duo facto legal by now but gay marriage was not even on the radar back then. Just getting gays basic rights (jobs, housing, accomodations) was the goal back then.

Eric Holder, the AG of the USA, said just last week that the administration will no longer go after marijuana that is legal under state laws- such as California and other states that have presciption marijuana. To me that is a big step in the right direction. Marijuana should be legal for adults to buy and use in private homes. It should be sold in a sealed packages in a liquor stores and no unsealed packages should be allowed outside of a residence- meanning you buy it, you take it home and you smoke it there and only there and nowhere else (as far as I am concerned the same should apply to cigarettes).

They were only recently invented as a description by Republicans to make liberals look bad.

they are "not just two guys who like to have sex with each other". they are a couple who LOVE each other and assume all of the duties and responsibilities of matrimony. why is that so difficult to understand?
