Do you view Southern as another language?

Or Californian?

According to an Austrian co-worker of mine, he said it's like comparing English to American. Technically, we speak English...but it isn't the same.

Ask your co-worker to translate 'wheeling and dealing' into 'Austrian'...

See if it varies from the German.

Thanks...I like to see Obama without his teleprompter so we can get more and more an idea of how he really is...

Better example: Ebonics.

But the fundamental issue with y'all is that you're assuming that there are languages and then there isn't anything else. When people say Austrian or Australian or Kiwi speak, they don't necessarily see them as "languages", unless they are desperate to make a point, which is the case here.

You can step into Australia, and tell anybody to teach you to speak "Australian". It would be drongo (my favorite word, apparently) to assume that you're actually looking at it as a language, the Australian mate of yours certainly won't. Because they will know, and you won't.

Lets get back to the OP....is Obama correct when he said:

What is wrong with it? He used an American idiom "wheeling and dealing" since he doesn't know what its Austrian equivalent would be.

Because there isn't an 'Austrian' term...there IS a German term however.

You know,German, the official language of Austria.....
