Over objections from the U.S. intelligence community, the White House (http://www.newsweek.com/related.aspx?subject=The+White+House - broken link) is moving to declassify—and publicly release—three internal memos that will lay out, for the first time, details of the "enhanced" interrogation techniques approved by the Bush administration for use against "high value" Qaeda detainees. The memos, written by Justice Department lawyers in May 2005, provide the legal rationale for waterboarding, head slapping and other rough tactics used by the CIA. One senior Obama official, who like others interviewed for this story requested anonymity because of the issue's sensitivity, said the memos were "ugly" and could embarrass the CIA. Other officials predicted they would fuel demands for a "truth commission" on torture.

I imagine eventually they will because like Pinochet Bush cannot escape his crimes. Torture is a war crime and the US has signed the Geneva Conventions banning torture.

Information obtained through torture is not reliable information, Torture does not work!

In fact, the professional FBI, CIA and army interrogators all agree. People will say anything to stop the pain. They’ll say what they think the torturer wants to hear. Moreover, they say that the way to actually get useful information out of prisoners, including information helpful to stopping future terrorist attacks, is to build trust and rapport with them or to outsmart them in ongoing conversations.

Army Field Manual 34-52 Chapter 1
“Experience indicates that the use of force is not necessary to gain the cooperation of sources for interrogation. Therefore, the use of force is a poor technique, as it yields unreliable results, may damage subsequent collection efforts, and can induce the source to say whatever he thinks the interrogator wants to hear.”

Shame on anyone who objects to the unconstitutional unwarranted incarceration of "Enemy Combatants". The Declaration of Independence does not apply, since E.C. aren't "all men" evidently. And they are not endowed by their Creator with certain inalienable rights. Due process certainly does not apply to them. . . nor to anyone else that the government outlaws by decree.

Ditto for the invasion of Iraq and Afghanistan. It doesn't matter that governments were deposed, property destroyed, and innocent people killed. Americans were defending "Freedom" and the "Right to consume the world's oil".

Anyway, we all know that it was mostly Saudis in the 2001 terrorist attack, and we have humiliated Saudi Arabia and defiled their holy land with our infidel troops.

In retaliation?

Real torture is when two POWs are being held in a chopper 500 feet above the ground and one of them is thrown out for refusing to talk. Believe me, it works. (Gee, I hope the liberals don't put me on trial for revealing this.)

Do YOU think dissent is unpatriotic? I don't, myself but many, many partisan hacks on CD and elsewhere do.

Default "torture doesn't work"

Depends on what you call torture doesn't it?

Any threat of even introductory torture would definitely work on me.

It is incredible that in the face of institutional sponsored beheadings, lashes and unspeakable torture that takes place throughout the world, someone would whine about about US interogation methods and expect to be taken seriously.

World opinion is just that, whimsical feelings expressed by feeble nations that roll over for any enemy that threatens their Disneyesque existence. Of course they have the USA on speed dial when the shadow of the hawk dims their light.

Nothing wrong with Gitmo.

Since the public refuses to vote people out of office, this will be a good way to get rid of the incumbents in Congress. I assume that under this great plan, they would be tried as well for going along with it.
