For those who are unaware, the USPS has been in a hiring freeze for about a year now. With all the bailouts should the government help the USPS? With people doing their bills online or over the phone it has hurt them as well as the loss in first class mail delivery revenue. Now the bulk volume has taken a hit.Even though people think the postal service is part of the government it actually is not and doesn not receive money the way other government entities do,but tell me a place where you can send a letter from NY to CA for .42 and it will get there in 3-4 days.Should they help?
The postal service is on the way of the dinosaurs. With online bill pay, ability to receive bills via e-mail, sending e-greetings for holidays, etc., there really is no need for them to exist as they currently do. They could be down-sized easily.
A few months ago there was some talk of reducing the number of days that mail would be delivered. They have to receive approval from Congress so I would guess that it died there? Does anyone know?
Just recently and news item discussed the USPS practice of purchasing homes of employees who transfer to other cities and have been unable to sell said home. The USPS has been paying up to 1.5mills for a home and in some cases unable to sell.
I don't think they really need to be bailed out of anything other than jail.

links? that sounds extreme.
USPS is still the cheapest way to send a package or letter. Just sayin.

I'll probably jinx myself but I think they do a good job in my town. The people at the desk in my post office are friendly, polite, helpful and efficient. My mail carrier comes the same time every day. Postage goes up in May, I think.

I spoke to my union a few months back and it was shot down.Originally they were going to close on a day like Tuesday where volume wasn't as high which would save them alot per year just based on that one day but they didn't want to because of thoughts of it effecting customer service.
i think the USPS does a pretty good job, it's just that so much communication now goes electronically. therefore --> fewer employees are needed--> hiring freeze.
OP, what sort of help are you suggesting they need? a rate increase would seem to be sufficient.

Story Highlights
8,400-square-foot home bought so postmaster could move to Texas
Spokesman says home will be resold; agent says that could be tough
Postmaster general has said service may be cut back because of economy
Postal Service is semipublic corporation, not supported by taxpayer funds
I think they do a good job also.
