Biodiesel fuel woes close Bloomington schools

Quote:
Rick Kaufman, the district’s spokesman, said elements in the biodiesel fuel that turn into a gel-like substance at temperatures below 10 degrees clogged about a dozen district buses Thursday morning. Some buses weren’t able to operate at all and others experienced problems while picking up students, he said.
Quote:
The Germans discovered the problem with diesel fuel during World War II. In cold weather, especially on the eastern front in Russia, the fuel in the tanks solidified, making them both useless and defenseless. The Allies stuck with gasoline, which had bigger safety problems but proved reliable for combat.
Quote:
If the fuel cannot be used in -20F weather, then we should be using fuel that works when it gets that cold. Having school children stand or sit in that kind of weather for any extended period of time is dangerous. To think that using a politically-correct form of fuel is more important than their safety or education demonstrates an obtuseness that simply boggles the mind.
I think it is outrageous that the school district couldn't get the waiver they needed - instead, they put children at risk. Wouldn't you think they would be prepared for this? They must know that the fuel does not work below certain temperatures.

The OP referred to policies, not producers.

We're saving the environment here, remember? One busload of frozen kids at a time.

LOL. And I doubt the OP was really a Hillary supporter, talk about liberal. So can we blame the economy on the conservatives? If you did, they would complain! LOL.
And NOWHERE in the article does it blame the liberals.. must be they converted during Bush-it's reign! STUPID CON POLICIES! So there!

Who do you think foisted the product onto the policymakers, Greenpeace? This is just an excuse to sell soybeans and corn and everyone knows that. I suppose it's cleaner than diesel fuel and it does reduce our D on FO, and Im sure every buyer of biodiesel fuel is elaborately warned beforehand that it gels at low temperatures - rather a key warning. So now the Northern school districts have to decide, do they want to buy new special filters, or switch to diesel in especially cold weather or what. Cost of doing business....nothing to do with liberal policies.

They're already selling as much corn and soy beans as they can produce...they're having to work overtime to keep up with demand, in fact.

If they stopped making fuel from corn, they wouldn't be losing a dime.

All you need to remember that this school is in the state that voted Al Franken in as one of their senators.

Now... any more questions?

Just about any liquid fuel will freeze at the right temperature. (if the buses were diesel, they would have still froze in the extreme cold - with wind chill it was -44.)

Lol, yeah. Since the Republican governor was wide open to the idea of biofuels as a way to avoid dependency on foreign oil and give the MN growers a boost, to the point where the state even mandated biodiesel requirements for a while, what's the "liberal" connection?
