What do you suggest that cities and states that are facing huge budget deficits do about the situation. Of course most people will say that they should cut the fat in their budgets but I suspect that there really is not that much fat left. The situation is at an emergency level in many cities and states with almost a third of the budgeted and expected funds to keep expected services missing.

Here are the options:

Raise taxes to make up for the difference

Cut spending even if it means cutting police, fire, schools, teachers, libraries, parks, roads, infrastructure, mass transit, etc.

Close libraries and parks and other nice to have services unless corporate america can sponsor them

Demand a bailout by the federal government

Well, if you were over in the Immigration forum, they would say deny services to illegal aliens...but if you were in the Religious forum, they might say, let the church handle some of these vital services, we'll take care of it with our tithes and offerings...and if you were in the Politics forum, the Republicans would say, cut spending and lower taxes and the Democrats would say, demand bailouts and raise taxes...I think the best thing to do is to look at case studies of how municipalities have successfully tackled this problem in the past...for example, Japan...

Each case will be different. However in this small west Texas town it is clear that huge spending cuts are called for. And this includes stop building more school rooms for illegals. I don't expect it to happen though as this county sits at the top of the list of Texas' 254 counties for property taxes on real estate and vehicles. Not surprisingly this County heavily supported GWB, the world's largest big spender and proponent of open borders.

Given the depth of the shortfalls. Cutting "pork" wont even get you close.

Unless you think schools and police are pork.

Default The Cities and States will cut visible and popular programs to punish us

When Cities and States cut programs due to budget issues they make a special point to cut the meat in the budget instead of the fat. It is almost like they want to punish the taxpayers who will not let them raise taxes. That way things get so bad that people agree to let their taxes rise.

Cut spending. Expecting taxpayers of other states to bailout the plush programs of the states that are facing financial crisis is stupid.

They can't, because they are in competition with neighboring states or cities, and all have to play byt the same rules.

Competition. How does George Steinbrenner compete? He borrows 160-million dollars to pay C. C. Sabathia to put on a Yankee uniform. That, my American friends, is how your precious miracle of competition works. You've got it. Live with it.

I vote that they cut out the zoning boards and police forces first.
