NASHVILLE, Tenn.- A push to make English Nashville's official language got a big helping hand from an out of state organization. Supporters of the Nashville "English-First" Petitions received a reported $19,000 from a group out of Virginia, and it's keeping the controversial issue in the spotlight.

Quick question; why is it "controversial" to expect that people in American make English their first language? Do you know that we're the only nation in the world without an official language?

You just answered your own question...

Personally, I'd like to see English be designated as our official language. We could save tens of millions on DMV forms alone... Unfortunately, as long as our legislators are too weak to write those kinds of laws, we're stuck printing every form in eighteen different languages and not being able to order lunch at our local fast food place without being bilingual...

If we still had a federal government, my preference would be a constitutional amendment. "The language of the federal government shall be English."

As far as the several states, they can do whatever the people in those states want to do.
