Well this is my first time create a new thread in the P&O but this one was
really interesting.
Confederate hero was slave
Memorial honors his role in Civil War, including as aide to Lee.
Charlotte Observer | 07/19/2008 | Confederate hero was slave (http://www.charlotte.com/breaking_news/story/719690.html - broken link)
There was a ceremony honoring a slave who served/aided a confederate solider (and at some point General Lee). His great-great grand-daughter was given a confederate flag.
I know there's been a zillion threads/posts on the Confederate Flag, the Civil War, etc. I'll say this. I believe a lot of families both Union and Confederate lost love ones- the death toll is still the #1 body count in any US war, foreign or domestic. At some point the solider is honored, he did his duty regardless of the ideology they were lead to believe they were fighting for. I've seen it with German/Allied veterans, American/Vietnamese veterans meeting up years later, in many cases crying and embracing. My point being that you can at some level respect someone for making a sacrifice.
I really don't know what to make of this story, other than I think it's "interesting" and I would never have guessed this scenario would happen.
Any other thoughts? Oh I'm hoping it doesn't quickly become, the south is racist, blah blah blah.
