In terms of EV ownership in Europe there is a significant levels of variation by nation, just as there is in terms of different states and parts of the US.
The recent downturn in sales of Teslas and electric vehicles, which is what Pete Buttigieg was commenting on, is being replicated in numerous other global markets, with global economics and the increase sales of hybrid vehicles having both been mentioned as possible factors.
Perhaps the vast size of the US, means that many people feel more secure having a traditional or hybrid vehicle rather than merely relying on an EV, and in terms of rural areas including parts of Pete's home state of Indiana, there are going to be less recharging points when compared to more urban areas.
It's also worth noting that parts of rural America often rely on more rugged traditional vehicles such as Pick Up's and they rely on these tough vehicles often for their livelihoods or even in relation to their very survival during very severe or extreme weather conditions.
