Perhaps if the US Congress didn't use NASA as a way to funnel taxpayer funds to their buddies in Boeing, Aerojet and whatever Thiokol is calling themselves now. Has anyone ever stopped to wonder why NASA is spending money in Alabama and not in orbit? Yeah, Sen. Shelby, looking at you.
FFS, during the GWB years, we had Constellation - a program that, among other things, hired a Thiokol lobbyist as chief developer of the manned launch platform. (Ares I). To the surprise of nobody, he decided that solid boosters were the way to go, because that's what Thiokol builds. And then - surprise again - suddenly we were burning billions of taxpayer funds on figuring out how to keep a solid-rocket booster from killing the astronauts. (Again, that is. Thiokol's contribution to the Shuttle already killed the Challenger crew.)
Mercifully, that particular deathtrap got cancelled, but not until it had made off with 6 billion dollars of our money.
Hate to break the news to you but in the US, neither Chinese nor female is considered a minority or of color when it comes to many diversity and inclusion initiatives.
While I'm no fan of China, they have done some interesting unmanned missions to the Moon recently and started assembling their own space station as well.
I say, if China can land the first woman on the Moon or land the first person (male of female) on Mars successful and before the US or everybody else can, then I say, go for it China and show the rest of the world how far your space program has come!
Remember when NASA was all crew-cut white guys chain smoking Lucky Strikes all day? If those guys were still around we’d be hanging out on a Hawaii-like beach on an exoplanet orbiting Alpha Centauri. That would be a travesty. Without diversity it just doesn’t mean as much.
