President-elect Joe Biden has decided to nominate Judge Merrick Garland as attorney general, people familiar with the matter tell CNN, a long-awaited decision that was moved toward completion Wednesday as it became apparent that Democrats were on the brink of winning control of the Senate.

The announcement of the attorney general, along with other senior leaders of the Justice Department, is expected to be made as soon as Thursday as Biden moves closer to filling the remaining seats in his Cabinet before assuming power on January 20.

Great choice and hopefully Doug jones can be deputy AG.

So from what I am seeing, this is part of a complex chess game - he's moving Garland so he can put his SCOTUS pick into Garland's current seat on the DC circuit until such time as a SCOTUS seat opens up. Not to say Garland isn't qualified to be AG of course, but there are many others who are as well

Let's hope this time he makes it. Gosh knows he has been thru the ringer with the political antics done to him by the ring wingers. They held out when he was nominated before. Sad that an educated and versed man was blocked.

I would of preferred Doug Jones of Preet but Garland seems like a superb choice as well.

He will make it because thanks to the good people of Georgia, Moscow Mitch can no longer hold the Senate hostage.

It's a fine pick. I was hoping for Preet or Sally Yates, but this is fine...

I would've loved to see Preet, but am cool with Garland.

emm74 makes a good point, and that could be exactly what Biden is doing.

I would have nom'd Sally Yates for AG and kept Garland in the pocket for any SCOTUS openings. That's not to say it eventually may play out that way...

Nope, Garland's time came and went - no fault of his own, but he's 68 now. Biden needs to put someone a couple of decades younger in any seat he is able to fill.

Barr is 2 years older than Garland.

Sessions is the same age as Trump and both turn 75, this year.

I have mixed feelings about the age thing.
