That’s...generally how taxes work. Sales tax, property tax, utility tax, you name it.

Top tax rates in the beloved 50s of the MAGA crowd were at 91%. But they don’t seem to understand that. Been brainwashed into thinking the rich are paying more than they used to.

Bull. There's no way to assemble the data necessary to make such a claim.

But the actual article points out something important. We have to stop the insane concentration of wealth that has been exacerbated by the Covid panic.

The amount we (not just billionaires) pay in taxes these days is very low. I don't mind paying it a low amount.

Yes I do agree that the bottom half should pay...

But that is still no excuse for the upper income rich brackets not paying their fair share either.

Assuming a rich person is paying close to zero income tax and a poor person paying is also close to zero income tax, the poor person is paying larger percentage of their income towards other taxes... Such as sales taxes.

And that leaves the middle class taking up the slack from both ends.

That's how it works, but it shouldn't. For the love of God, please use some imagination. "But...that's how its always been done" is not a rational argument. Fair is everyone paying the same amount for the same government services. Period. End of story. Income has NOTHING to do with it. Jeebus, why is this so hard to understand for liberals?

Yup... That is correct. It is the middle class that drives a consumer economy.

The progressive system is fair. Everyone pays x% for y amount of income bracket. Everyone is paying the same 10% on the first $9700.

A flat fixed amount for everyone(that the poor and middle class could pay without being made bankrupt) would have America crumbling unable to support itself.

He's not getting the same government services. The first priority of legitimate government is to protect the nation from invasion. The second priority of legitimate government is to protect citizens from one another. Protecting a billion dollars costs a lot more (and is worth a lot more) than protecting a thousand dollars.

Don't think that would work... A poor person would end up paying close to 100% and middle class would be more than half their I come towards the government fixed flat fee. It would mean I would paying the same amount towards highway infrastructure with two cars as Amazon with 1000s of vehicles wearing on our nation's roads.

It would stifle the consumer market and government wouldn't have enough to operate
