There are a few Trump supporters on this forum questioning the effectiveness of using homemade masks. Calling it a conspiracy and asking for scientific studies to back up the claim that homemade masks help.

Here you go:

Quote:

Reducing transmission of SARS-CoV-2

Surgical mask material reduces the likelihood and severity of COVID-19 by substantially reducing airborne viral concentrations (13). Masks can also protect uninfected individuals from SARS-CoV-2 aerosols and droplets (13, 14). Thus, it is particularly important to wear masks in locations with conditions that can accumulate high concentrations of viruses, such as health care settings, airplanes, restaurants, and other crowded places with reduced ventilation. The aerosol filtering efficiency of different materials, thicknesses, and layers used in properly fitted homemade masks was recently found to be similar to that of the medical masks that were tested.

I believe you're confused.

Even your own source says:

Outside those limited conditions, they really aren't helpful, and may actually increase the risk of infection if not worn and disposed of properly.

Quote:
(CNN)US Surgeon General Dr. Jerome Adams not only wants people to stop buying facemasks to prevent the novel coronavirus, but warns that you actually might increase your risk of infection if facemasks are not worn properly.

"You can increase your risk of getting it by wearing a mask if you are not a health care provider," Adams said during an interview on Fox & Friends on Monday morning.

If someone wears a seatbelt improperly it can do more harm. So no one wear a seatbelt.

A) This has nothing to do with Trump. WTF. Stop making this a political us vs. them thing.
B) Noone ever said it wasn't effective, just that it's not 100% effective. There's a huge difference. The n95 mask is still the most effective.

At least half the masks I see people wearing are cloth and many people are probably wearing them day after day without sanitizing them. There’s a reason the stores stopped allowing people to bring in recyclable grocery bags as soon as Covid hit.

I think that's the problem with making them mandatory to begin with. No one has the time to wash a handmade mask everytime they go out. So people end up wearing the same dirty mask every day, which defeats the purpose of even wearing them. And some of these masks are being price gouged, so its not like its easy or cheap to find new masks.

I see more people touching their faces now WITH the masks than when they aren't wearing them. On top of that, if theyre not being washed daily...

Oh plenty of people on this very board have said they are not effective at all or have the opposite effect and said it's just a political virtue signaling statement to wear one.
