One of the worst problems of mitigating the coronavirus pandemic has been the ever-changing advice from the experts and professionals in the fields of medicine generally and public health policy specifically. One day we are told one thing, the next day brings different advice.

Dr. Fauci hasn’t always worn a face mask when briefing the press. He and Dr. Birx have occasionally worn masks up until recently. Now they seem to be making a point of doing so. Today Fauci is renewing his call for Americans to wear a face mask in public. He admits it is a symbolic gesture at this point and that face masks aren’t completely effective but they help.

I'll wear a mask for a little bit longer as more data comes out. But no, I am not wearing a mask for the rest of my life when out in public.

When you cough or sneeze, a surgical mask helps trap droplets you might have sprayed into the air. So does an N95 mask.

A surgical mask won't really help filter out lone viruses (not in droplets), the virus particles are very tiny, much smaller than bacteria, and will go right through them. If someone else in the room is coughing or sneezing, the surgical mask won't be of much use in protecting you from their virus.

But if someone is coughing or sneezing, and you are wearing an N95 mask, that WILL stop most of the virus particles. 95% in fact, that's where the name comes from. Its mesh is a lot finer, and it carries a static charge that attracts the virus particles into its fiber and stops them from passing through.

Bottom line, a surgical mask will help somewhat to protect others from your virus, but won't help protect you from theirs.

An N95 mask will do a lot to protect others from your viruses, and do a lot to protect you from theirs.

BTW, a KN-95 mask is a Chinese version of an American N95. The CDC did tests on a lot of KN95s, and found that they are just as effective as N95s.

The wearing of a Mask is symbolic .... that is essentially what the CDC is saying today.

Nobody can guess what they will say tomorrow.... the story is now changing almost daily.

That's not what he said...

It isn't just symbolic respect for others around you but to also protect yourself and others.

"I want to protect myself and protect others, and also because I want to make it be a symbol for people to see that that's the kind of thing you should be doing,"

So kind of like a Black Lives Matter bumper sticker on the car of a racist, or a rainbow flag on the porch of a homophobe?

Good to know.

I have a couple R95 masks from a previous house projects in the attic. Turns out they are also as effective and a little easier to find than N95s. I don't plan on using them... just have them handy if by chance I have to enter a hospital. 3 rambunctious boys... not the 1st, 2nd or 3rd time I've had to take one in for something broken or stitches.. lol.

They only filter one way?

So he says the masks can be somewhat helpful but also says they are a symbol of compliance. That part is going to discourage many people from wearing masks. It was counterproductive to slip that bit in there.

If I was tested every day, a mask would be symbolic for me too.

BUt I haven't been tested at all -- so a mask is respect for those that I may have to be within 6 ft. of.

REally -- only shopping and I don't shop often so I'm good.
