This would be a win-win for him and laid off GM workers.

I thought I heard about Fiat Chrysler buying one of the GM factories but am too lazy to look for the story now.

This is how free markets should be allowed to work, not the never-ending bail out system where the dinosaurs of auto industry take the money and carry on with mostly business as usual.

Pretty sure that a bunch of laid off GM plant workers would be great candidates for jobs in a new Tesla plant.

Yeah, except for that $7500 subsidy for each Tesla sold and all that tax money that will be given as incentives to Tesla should they open a factory there.

Let's remember, Tesla got it's early funding from Obama's green jobs initiative. Anyone saying that a. govt doesn't create jobs, or b. Obama didn't do anything to contribute to the economy needs to wake up.

I'll take incentive based (each car sold) government handouts as opposed lump sums of money being thrown at a problem that the old auto manufacturers are incapable of solving. I also don't see it as a problem if a state decides they want to give a business a reason to come to their state because they can offer a competitive advantage. All smarter decisions than trying to pump life into a failing industry.

I'm guessing that Musk is making this noise because VW hinted last week that it is thinking of building it's electric cars in closed Ford factories in the USA. This to avoid Trump tariffs.

Of course the MSM didn't make much muster about that one.

This tax credit will be phased out for Tesla over the coming year. It drops to $3750 for 6 months starting in January, then $1875 the second 1/2 of the year.

In other countries where incentives went away, Tesla's sales plummeted.
