Eh. Kodiak bears don't belong in the same category as polar bears. They're just oversized grizzlies, and they eat mostly plants, fish, rodents, and scavenged other food. Their normal prey is small, easy to catch, and unthreatening, so while I wouldn't describe them as "afraid" of humans, we're in the size range that is, for them, just too much of a hassle to mess with on a day-to-day basis. As with most brown bears, in normal circumstances, if you leave them alone, they'll generally leave you alone, and if you give them a chance to move off, they'll generally move off. They're willing to share their apex predator spot in the food chain with us.
Polar bears, on the other hand, actively hunt humans.
