If Trump admits that Russia meddled, it gives the Mueller investigation a reason to exist (in the eyes of the people). And if he admits Russia meddled, it probably means that while he is a our legitimate President it calls into question just how much help the meddling did in getting him there. Even if he was unaware that he was the primary benefactor of it.

I think many people are conflating Russian meddling with collusion and obstruction of justice. These are related but are not the same thing.

Collusion would be if Trump or his campaign worked together with foreign agents to release damaging information on his opponents.

Meddling in the election involves agents of a foreign country taking action to either discredit our electoral process (DNC hack for example) or to convince people to vote for a particular candidate (facebook propaganda, just an example).

Obstruction of justice would be if the President prevented the FBI (for example) from investigating the meddling or collusion

The point is, while these are related, they are NOT the same thing. It should be easy for him to admit that Russia meddled in our election. He loses nothing except maybe a bit of a hit to his ego - but he'd still be president. It is the common sense thing to do. Considering the man has such a low bar to step over in order to be considered doing a good job, this is an easy win. As easy of a win as not endorsing white supremacists or accepting support from David Duke.

But I think the problem is that his supporters don't understand the difference between these three things. You can accept meddling and reject collusion and obstruction of justice. But they can't. And neither can Trump. It is like saying that your team "won the game" due to a technicality. It is an empty victory, but it is still shows up in the win column and no one can take that away.

Last week, he criticized Obama for not doing anything.

Now, Trump is saying the whole "Russier thing" is a big hoax.

Which is it, Donald?
