There are far more than one or two extreme examples like this.

The guy being in jail will be the only thing that stops the union from fighting to get the guy his job back. There is nothing a teacher's union member can do that teacher's unions wouldn't still fight for their "rights". The interests of the students aren't even on their radar.

My daughter had a teacher in 4th grade that had some kind of mental breakdown in the classroom. She'd stand in front of the room kind of catatonic and cry and no teaching would occur. Parents protested and demanded she be removed from the classroom, and the union fought hard to keep her there. They knew what was going on in that classroom and they just didn't care. This was a small town and it was only when the board realized a recall election was going to be launched that they acted, buying her out with a year's salary or so and she went on disability.

My hope is that the recent Janus decision, by making public sector union dues voluntary, will weaken the public sector unions such that cases like this don't happen. As it is the teachers' union in this state (WEA) is considered the most powerful political player in the state, so they generally get what they want.

If their membership drops by 30-50 percent, that will no longer be the case. This will take time, though.

The LA teacher who fed his students cookies laced with his semen had been protected by his union for decades. He had accusations of sexual assault for 30+ years but left to abuse little kids by the state and school system.

From a thread re Janus in the work/employment forum:

Another falsehood is that unions support poor workers, especially in teaching. Yes, there are bad teachers, but if administrators want them to leave, they are many ways to accomplish this. The problem isn't evil unions, it's poor administrators.
