What is everyone's opinion the brutal slaying of Larry King, the California teenager who was shot twice in the back of the head at school for being a transvestite? For those unfamiliar with the murder, here is an article from the Associated Press:

CitizensVoice.com - Associated Press News (broken link)

Here is a link to a memorial site:

Lawrence King Memorial

In my personal opinion as someone who was bullied in high school for being of an alternative sexual orientation myself, I can see why the right-wing has attempted to keep this swept under the rug. I can also see why so many of my fellow LGBT community members, including myself, have become nearly MILITANT against the right-wing. After all, we're officially second-class citizens in this nation, and then when something like this happens there's little outcry---almost as if it doesn't even matter to most people. Why? The mainstream American society has been INDOCTRINATED through the likes of Ann Coulter, George W. Bush, Rick Santorum, Mike Huckabee, Pat Robertson, and other Republican right-wing nut jobs into thinking that we are vile creatures who wouldn't be missed if we were murdered.

I was lucky in high school in that the bullies stopped when our mutual friends, who were quite numerous, would shun them until they stopped messing with me, but from what the article says Larry King was a frequent victim of homophobia----a serious issue that is largely overlooked by a horribly-equipped American public educational system, may I add. How many more Larry Kings, Brandon Teenas, or Matthew Shepards are there going to be before hate crime legislation is extended to include sexual orientation and is AGGRESSIVELY enforced?

Clearly this is a horrible crime. I think the people mentioned in the OP as nutjobs would also consider this a horrible crime.

People are murdered every day. Not all of them make the national news, nor should they.

I realize that this is a case that is near to your heart, but objectively, why do you feel that this murder deserves any more attention than any other? What's the foundation for your accusation that the "right-wing has attempted to keep this swept under the rug"?

Every unjustified homicide is a tragedy. I don't want to downplay the significance of this to those involved, their families or those who feel as if they have a personal connection. But I don't see why it deserves the attention of an entire nation, nor do I see why your accusation above should be considered justified.

There should be no separate class of justice or additional punishment for what is considered to be a "hate crime". A crime is a crime. You should be punished for the actions you take, not for what you think. If someone yells "you're ugly" as they're swinging at your nose, how is that different than if they yelled "you're gay" as they're swinging at your nose? Does the injury somehow become more severe?

I would hope so. Then again am I not mistaken when I heard that Ann Coulter made light of the tragic death of the child of John Edwards? Is nothing sacred to that woman?

From my understanding, Coulter's remark was more about Edwards and what she sees as a tendency to use anything for his gain than it was about trivializing the death. If anything she was accusing him of trivializing it. It was tasteless though.

Well I think it's horrible and I sway right wing on some issues.Don't put all your eggs into the left wing basket, remember it's them that would disarm you from protecting yourself.

Most people of any political party would think this is sad except those that think that sexuality is such a sin that it warrents death. Some of those are the same ones that are ready to kill all Muslims which ironically enough those Muslim extremists are for death of all gays also.

Tragic case all around. Considering I think the media is overwhelming left, I think the proposition that the right is burying the story kinda strange; in any event making a political right/left issue misses the bigger issue.

What would be interesting is to hear opinions on appropriate reaction for children (or even adults) being unwantedly propositioned by members of the same sex. The PC answer may be boy/girl or boy/boy what's the diff but it's deeper than that for some. This hit me as overly aggressive pursuit; something that should've been stopped by adults or a punch. Be interesting to see the defense of this case.
