Remember, Crist was formerly Florida's attorney general--well, he still is until inaugurated. So plenty of stuff happened on his watch.
This link concerning insurance is interesting.
"Insurance broker will pay millions to end state probe" http://www.orlandosentinel.com/news/...,5526999.story
Florida began its investigation after New York Attorney General and Gov.-elect Eliot Spitzer launched a probe of suspected bid-rigging, price-fixing, kickbacks and other improprieties by major national insurance brokerages
Gov.-elect Crist inherits his share of problems. Spiraling homeowners insurance rates and property taxes are crippling many Floridians financially. The schools are a mess. Crime and rampant growth are facts of life. The middle class is vanishing, and what's left of it is largely ignored by state legislators. If Charlie Crist can make progress toward solving these problems, his governorship will be judged positively. If not, he won't earn my vote four years from now.
What I DO know about "walkin lawton" was that he supported AND signed a tax on coin shops and coin dealers in Fla. Know what happened? 90% of the coin shops and coin dealers either went out of business, left the state or stopped doing business in Fla.
Jeb Bush repealed that law and now not only is the state becoming THE place in the country for coin collectors and coin dealers , the FUN show ( Florida United Numismatists ) which is held in Orlando every January and hosts more than 25,000 visitors, who come with real money, every year and it's grown so large that a second FUN show in Palm Beach is beginning in July 2007 as well.
Walkin lawton was a dirtbag who would have been happy to sign into regulation a state income tax as well. His ilk would be better off as a coral reef.
i hear that florida got a new governor not too long ago. is he being good to florida, or is he being a carbon copy of lawton chiles?
Oh my gosh, we've had another governor or two since Lawton Chiles! Ever hear of Jeb Bush??? At any rate, Crist hasn't officially started yet, but he did make the headlines this morning.....seems he's decided it is unseemly for him to have inaugural balls costing donors upwards of $50,000 when so many Floridians are struggling unbelievable increases in taxes and insurance bills....nice of him, don't you think???
well, a few floridians, especially a gentleman i had a chat with in tampa, did tell me that lawton chiles did cut a lot of services for low income and disabled people, and he did not respond very well to hurricane andrew.

That last paragraph is really over the top....he was well respected, even loved, in most areas in this state.
He also went after the tobacco industry and the state was awarded something like 12 billion $$ which he designated to be used in educational programs for youth to stop or not start smoking. That has been cut down in this adminstration to the point where very little of that money goes where it should. Furthermore, he began many programs for famiies and especially children -- Healthy Start & KidCare health ins. program for uninsured kids for two of the best things going. The decrease in the number of SIDS deaths (crib death) since that time is directly related to these programs. HE was very proactive in doing smart and healthy things for the children and families of Florida.
i also read that in 1998, when lawton chiles ceased to be governor, florida was ranked 48th place for services for people with disabilities. (in 2004, florida was ranked 31st place.)
