The United States has never been a democracy.

It has always been a republic.

As for Trump becoming a dictator, it might help the weak-minded if they actually waited for that to happen before they pronounced him one.
A republic (from Latin: res publica) is a sovereign state, country, or government which is organized with a form of government in which power resides in elected individuals representing the citizen body and government leaders exercise power according to the rule of law.

I think someone on FOX must have made this convoluted claim that if the U.S. is a Republic, it can't be a democracy, because it's been making the rounds the last few months on right-wing posts.

Trump is Hitler. Flynn is a Russian agent working for Putin.

Yeah I don't listen to anything anymore of the liberals until they grow up and learn to be civil and stop being insane.

A republic cannot be a democracy.

If you understood basic civics, you would know that.

In a democracy, the voters make and change the law directly.

That does not happen in a republic.

In the United States, there have been many laws and even constitutional principles that -- if put to a vote by the masses of people -- would have been rejected.

The US was formed as a Republic rather than a Monarchy, just as France became a Republic after it's revolution. If there were two countries most linked to the concept of being a liberal republic it is these countries.

In no country that I know of do the voters make and change laws directly, what they do is elect officials who act on behalf of the people and who vote and make legislation on their behalf. Occasionally there will be a referendum on an issue and the people get a vote, Brexit being a case in point.

The Athenian democracy referred to by Plato made all citizens part of the legislature -- making laws directly.

The BBC was referring to Plato's criticism of democracy.

Hence my original post in this thread.

Very true but you forgot that we hate the muslims and ban all of them and not 6 or 7 countries already pointed out by Obama.

You only got to vote in the Athenian democracy if you were male, owned land and were not a slave, therefore only around 10% of the population had a vote, which is hardly democracy.

In terms of the modern world, democracy is usually in the hands of a small excutive who legislate and make laws on behalf of those who elected them. The Elected Executive is Government, the Legislative is Parliament and the Judiciary who implement the Laws are the Courts, this applies on a national, devolved (state) and even local level.

The BBC was indeed talking about the limitations of democracy and that democracies ultimate end could be authortarian rule via a tyrannical figure, as Plato predicted in 'The Republic'.
