Are you kidding? ANYTHING even remotely negative in the general vicinity of LGBTQXYZ people is called a 'hate crime' these days. It can't possibly just be a crime, maybe simple vandalism, it has to be a hate crime.

Might be a "hate crime" if it was dumped at Rosie O'donnell's home. Then again she'd eat the evidence before the police arrived.

This was done in a liberal neighborhood in a college town in a very conservative area - house supposedly has 10 or so rainbow flags up. While insensitive, does it constitute a hate crime?
I'm a conservative and we don't care what people do in their bedrooms. Conservatives don't pull left wing aggression either. This was either a setup by the victims or some stupid young males just being total jerks.

They also scattered nails behind the cars in the driveway. I live and work in the area and we have mutual friends. That fact is also in the news reports. It seemed like a pretty intentional act.

Could have been for a neighbor, there is no proof that this was intended for them. A truck could have just lost it's load. They need more evidence.

And there's a base 50%, although I'd put it at 80%, that it was done by LGBT who just wanted to pretend to be victims for the media attention.

Considering this:

Members of the South Side Neighborhood Organization, which works within the Tree Streets neighborhood, will be selling flags for $5 to people in the area who want to show support for Porter and members of the LGTBQ community.
“It’s definitely not OK, and it doesn’t belong in our neighborhood,” said SNO’s Amber Floyd Lee about the motive behind the incidents.
Those flags, rainbow flags with peace signs, will be available through the Tree Streets Facebook page. All proceeds from the sale of the flags will go to the Tennessee Human Rights Campaign.
...you almost have to assume that it's a hoax/publicity stunt until proven otherwise.

Well it was on the street not their doorstep.
If someone deliberately put it there they should be fined but I don't see how its a hate crime.
But then aren't most crimes hateful. You don't harass or assault people because you like them.
