Two great books that actually represented an enlightened view on race.

Default Book Banning

I think we should be very careful when we start banning books, I don't think it's a good idea.

There seems to be a trend toward believing that there was no such thing as enlightened views in earlier times. Prior to a couple years ago everyone and everything was totally racist, sexist and _____phobic.

Whatever.

Nobody can have their feelings hurt in our culture. No one is good enough to look past someone's (mostly the minorities) opinions.

We are a pampered culture.

I wonder if the concerned mother knows her child is listening to rap music full of n-words?

I do not like the idea of banning books.

I do think that it matters how the books are presented to children, specifically, that it is explained that to describe a thing is not necessarily to condone it. Once kids have reached an age and level of sophistication to understand that, I think these books are fine. If they are presented too early, I can see how it could be a problem.

What grade are we talking about here? Right now this is only a temporary move while the board is reviewing the mother's complaint. After all, if the *F* word were in a book over 200 times, most parents wouldn't want their young kids reading it. Of course banning any form of literature is wrong, but I'm not sure we have all the facts.

Just a personal note. When I was about 12 or 13, I was looking for "Peyton Place" in the local library, and the librarian scolded me and said she would never have a book like that on the shelf. Of course I don't remember her exact words, but I remember it was a new show on TV and I wanted to read the book.
