I remember something from my history classes from school in that Washington DC was cut out of Maryland and Virginia but, the Va part was returned and it became Alexandria. IMHO it's time to hand DC back to Maryland except for a few blocks around the White House down to the river which would be covered by the Capital cops.

Yes, the Virginia portion of DC was handed back to VA.

Handing the Maryland portion back to Maryland would solve the "no taxation without representation" nonsense that happens as DC has no elected officials in congress.

I actually think this would be a good thing. D.C. residents would finally get the recognition they've wanted.

The issues with this are Republicans would like to do retrocession, Democrats would like to do statehood, no one is asking Maryland what they would want, and for most people this isn't a pressing issue to bother spending time on.

D.C. was never meant to be a state.

I never said it was, I personally think it should stay DC and the representation of the Maryland side of DC should go to Maryland. The budget of DC should be taken away from Congress and given back to the city.

If D.C was granted statehood there would be one more Democrat in Congress, two more Democratic Senators and one more Democratic Governor. It would have no change on the Electoral College.

If it were to go to Maryland, Maryland would gain an additional Congressional seat, in the 2010 Census it would have come at the expense of a Minnesota seat (no way to tell which seat would have been impacted, Minnesota's redistricting for Congress was done by the Courts in 2010). There would be three less EV's, Obama's 2012 margin would have been 65-33 instead of 62-36 and Maryland's Governor would have very likely be a Democrat.
