Well look at that, you moved the goal posts.....now what about Eastern Europeans, when they migrated here or do you lump them in with the Germans as well?
You're the one moving the goal post. E. Europeans didn't found and build America. They arrived and legally mostly after the 1880s. I really don't see your point as E. Europeans were still white Europeans and mostly Christian. We didn't need anymore immigration from Europe after the 1960s. And certainly never needed all the non-European immigration we've been forced with since the 1965 immigration act.

They moved here because the founding fathers made the country so that immigrants could move here. They could have easily closed the doors with their new country.
So you think it didn't exist just because their wasn't a word for it yet? Well I guess there you go, no different cultures existed in together until after 1960.
Multiculturalism is the idea that it is desirable for immigrants to maintain their old ways rather than assimilate, and that it's better for a country to have many dissimilar cultures within it than to have one culture which unites it. That philosophy did not exist in the 19th century. There were groups of recent immigrants with their own cultures but it was expected that their children and grandchildren would blend into the American melting pot.

If there was no idea of dissimilar cultures co-existing before the mid 20th century than why did the US have a federal structure instead of a unitary state? Why was there a 10th Amendment? If the idea was having one culture and one way of doing things then there would have been a strong central government from the get-go and very weak states.

Then I guess there was no such things as ethnic neighborhoods until 1960 in the US....

Come on... do you really think federalism was the same thing as multiculturalism? People wanted more direct influence over their government, without all the big decisions being made in far away Washington D.C.. Yes there were people who took pride in their regional uniqueness, but it's a stretch to compare that with 21st century multiculturalism.

There were, and they were usually centered around recent immigrants and their children. Beyond that people pretty much assimilated and there was nobody telling them they should not.

So you are saying it was just the same then as it was today.....that kind of defeats your own argument.....
