I would imagine taxes...

Have a few connections to people in New York that relocated at retirement...

All cited taxes and weather... several said if money was not an object... they would have stayed.

Kind of similar in California... many move and take their pensions with them citing income tax...

The point is that NY LOST 2 Congressional seats. Period. You LOOSE seats because your population went DOWN. Texas picked up 4 seats, SC picked up 1 seat and NC was right on the cusp of picking up another seat.

So why don't EXPLAIN why so many NY'ers moved OUT of NY.

Remember we are talking about State not 1 city.

An interesting site.

"Of the 20 million New Yorkers alive today, nearly one in six are now in the South, an idea that would have been almost unthinkable 50 years ago.

The boomers are all starting to retire. They are taking their pensions and SS checks and moving to states like Texas and Florida that have no taxes.

Simple, but true.

Makes sense. Plus sell the house in New York, purchase a similar one in Texas for a lot less.

Don't mess with Texas...

The majority of Texans, are more loyal to the State, than they will ever be for the Union.
Cannot say that for any other State, in the Union in todays world.

All I know is that MORE people are moving AWAY from blue states if they have the choice.

Now someone will come on here, again, and point out individual cities but, we are talking about STATES.

What blue state GAINED a Congressional set from the last census?

Polls, articles etc. are ALL biased. The Census numbers speaks for itself.
The numbers look pretty consistent based on census data between 2001 and 2012

https://www.census.gov/dataviz/visua...ns/043/508.php

According to this chart people in the northeast tend to move to other northeastern states, but they also move all over the place which is true from people in all regions

http://www.nytimes.com/2014/08/24/up...abt=0002&abg=1

In 2012 the number of people that moved to Texas that were FROM the northeast was less than 5%. Not thinking the people of the northeast fancy Texas as much as you think.

Now as far as states in the south go... on average most of the states harbor 3-5% total population as Northeasterners.

I'm willing to bet most of the people that moved would cite you weather and cheaper houses in the south over red vs blue. Older people tend to not tolerate the cold as much as well which I'm sure contributed to the migration.

In almost all of the northeast the population changes were positive numbers for every year in the last decade. NY saw a couple dips of about 0.2% and 0.1% in 2004 and 2005 as well as Maine so I'm not sure where you're getting this idea that suddenly everybody is leaving the northeast in favor of the south!

Washington state. Nevada and Florida gained seats too, both states that went for Obama in both his elections.

And of the 10 states that lost congressional seats, 3 are red (Missouri, Louisiana, Iowa), 3 are swing states currently controlled by republican congresses and governors (Pennsylvania, Ohio, Michigan), 3 are very blue (Massachusetts, NY, and Illinois), and the other really is the crazy state, New Jersey

My conclusions from the 2010 census is that people are fleeing poor (no jobs) and cold. Especially cold
