What a moronic practice that is. A guy about a quarter mile away from my sister got killed by "celebratory gunfire" while he was sitting in his home watching TV.
Three guys shot off a 9mm handgun in town here about 2-3 years ago on the 4th of July irrc. Dropped a little girl playing with kids in her back yard on her birthday. The gun owner admitted it was his and he went to jail. The girl is still dead.

It's more prevalent in areas with a lot of immigrants from countries where it's a more common celebratory event. Mexico in particular.
Sadly, in the parts of the cities of this country where it's most common they have a hard enough time getting people not to intentionally shoot other people, let alone not fire their guns in the air.

Pretty much spot on. About a year ago i went to look at a Blazer in Independence Mo(they are pretty self sufficient in regards to making their own powder). 23rd st is a major east/west street. I went south of there to 24th st. The lady told me that she didn't like the area at all. He husband consoled her with the statement of. Yeah Honey but most of the shooting goes on north of 23rd st.
The wild west? Back in the "wild west" many western & Kansas towns had gun restrictions - no guns in town (guns were collected/returned at the outskirts), no discharge of fire-arms in town limits, and/or no guns in bars. Righties dream of unregulated wild west that wasn't.
Did the Wild West Have More Gun Control Than We Do Today?
Yet this is all based on a widely shared misunderstanding of the Wild West. Frontier towns -- places like Tombstone, Deadwood, and Dodge -- actually had the most restrictive gun control laws in the nation.
Dodge City Believed in Strict Gun Control
Laws were drawn up banning .... the carrying of guns within the town limits (all who entered had to place their weapons on pegs provided in most public places), and the discharge of firearms within the city limits except on such holidays as the Fourth of July and New Year's Day. The gun toter was subject to being shot on sight by the town police. Strict gun control was vital for public safety.
Must have been after the days of Marshal Matt Dillon & Doc Holiday.
Hummmmmmmmmm, well I'm from hick state Alabama, and where I live we just don't have that...could it happen, I guess...but at least it's not around me...
Obviously the odds of getting hit are lower where there's less population. But this isn't limited to big cities.
I live in a small town that is LITERALLY in the wild west in a state with the most relaxed gun laws in the country.
If you pop a cap off here for holidays, that's your ass if you get caught...And although I hate snitching, I'm calling the cops if I see it. That's just insane..
Alabama?
Geez..Nevermind.
And I didn't ask for a clarification from the OP because "because they can" is probably correct.
LOL, "because they can" yet yo ustil call the cops on them....why, because it's illegal...duhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
