I'm not the one pretending that capitalist American representative democracy in 2014 is indistinguishable from communist Soviet totalitarianism in 1974.

The idea is patently absurd, and serves only to demonstrate the complete disconnect from reality that you cons display on a regular basis.

Which of these features of Soviet totalitarianism in 1974 is present in the U.S. today?

- Almost complete lack of private enterprise (the only exceptions being produce markets).
- All wages and prices set by the central government.
- Complete lack of freedom of the press. All media outlets run by the government.
- Complete lack of freedom of expression.
- Multiple prison camps housing tens of thousands of prisoners of conscience in deadly conditions.
- One-party rule.
- Chronic shortages of most consumer goods.
- Complete lack of freedom of movement except for a select elite few.
- Complete disregard for the environment.
- Complete ideological and military control over multiple neighboring countries.

You cons can shriek and moan and pretend all you like that Obama is a latter-day Brezhnev (or Stalin), but that idea is contradicted by even the most passing familiarity with the facts, and your insistence to the contrary just makes you look silly.

We have:

-private enterprise facing ever-increasing dictates by the federal government to which they must comply or go out of business.
-minimum wages being set by the federal government
-The MSM under almost total control by the Democratic Party
-All private communications monitored by the NSA
-Harassment of opposition political activity by the federal government
-Use of planning and zoning laws to dictate where and how people can live
-Use of environmental laws to dictate how people can live
-Ideological and military control over many countries

Buy a clue.

Oh, and vy govorite po-russke?

I doubt it.

Oh! Nine months huh? Well, that certainly makes you an expert.

Dude, Weltshmertz informed you she was is FROM Russia (Soviet Union). Therefore, in the battle of "who is better qualified to say whether 2014 US is remotely like 1971 Soviet Union.... you lose. Period.

BTW: The MSM is not under the control of anyone. We have greater access to information now than at any time. And again, nobody cares about your private communications. Nobody is sitting at a computer going through your e-mails for the fun of it. Planning and zoning is nothing new, and indeed, keeps the country from being the cluster that is Houston. We had more ideological and military control over countries in 1971 than we do now. Oh, and there WAS NO OPPOSITION PARTIES to speak of in the Soviet Union!

Kinechno, ya govoriu po russke.
When was the last time you stood in a bread line? Went to the store and all they had was mayonnaise?
Wanted to visit your friends in a neighbouring town and needed official permission? In writing?

Give me a break.

Please explain. And keep in mind that the concept of "profit" (not to mention "stock market") did not exist in the USSR.
-minimum wages being set by the federal government. Not the same as the government controlling ALL wages and prices.
-The MSM under almost total control by the Democratic Party. And yet FOX News is by far the most popular cable channel -- as you cons never cease to remind us.
-All private communications monitored by the NSA. So why hasn't there been a knock on your door?
-Harassment of opposition political activity by the federal government. The IRS targeted left-wing groups too. How many thousands of GOP activists are languishing in jail?
-Use of planning and zoning laws to dictate where and how people can live. Did someone force you to choose a single-family home? (or an apartment, as the case may be?) Did the government build your dwelling and forcibly assign you to it? Or are you just upset because your town (as opposed to the Federal government) won't let a strip club go in next door to your local church?
-Use of environmental laws to dictate how people can live. The Soviet Union had none, and look what happened: Sverdlovsk, Chernobyl, etc.
-Ideological and military control over many countries. I must have missed it when we invaded France after it elected a Socialist government. Or Cuba.

Buy a clue.

Yes, I speak it fluently. That's what I was doing there -- learning Russian.

(It's po-russki, by the way.)

I'd say a lot more, but C-D has a rule against posting in languages other than English. I'm sure Obama forced them to adopt it.

Now here come the "slippery slope" arguments in which the cons will attempt to persuade us that the advent of employer mandates for health care, or anti-discrimination laws, or laws that make it slightly more difficult for crazy people to acquire deadly weaponry, will lead us inexorably to the GULag.

Never mind the fact that Russia is, was, and always has been a totalitarian society. It all goes back to the fact that it never experienced a Renaissance, so its people have never evolved past a medieval, feudal mindset.

The US is far from blameless (see: slavery, the treatment of Native Americans, the internment of Japanese-Americans, etc.) but it has nothing resembling Russia's history of despotism, no matter what today's ultra-cons say about Obama, or LBJ, or Wilson, or Lincoln.
