When yuppies start moving in a neighborhood, buying property, and improving it, poor people are driven out, regardless of race. When "affordable housing" or section 8 is placed in middle or upper class neighborhoods, the traditional residents start running away, again, regardless of race. It is all about property values.
As to banning Trader Joe's? What idiots. Not only are they turning away a potential employer but they are also turning away reasonably priced place that sells fresh foods. Trader Joe brand cereals, for instance, are cheaper than not only their brand name counterparts, but also many other grocery store brands.
They are imported from Germany. Trader Joes is a german company. You would think they would cost more.
No, it's realistic. Gentrification is 21st century colonialism.
Absurd.
For it to be colonialism, the area being colonized needs to be inhabited by original, indigenous people. In the case of poor neighborhoods being gentrified, the "oppressed" folks living there are not the original, indigenous people, but the folks who settled there that caused its decay.
Case in point - East Cleveland. At one point in the city's history, East Cleveland was home to Millionaire's Row, thriving business, and close proximity (to city center) suburbs of mostly Central and Eastern European immigrants. That began to change in the 1960s. Today, East Cleveland is home to "suburban blight", high crime rates, massive poverty, and virtually no presence of the Central and Eastern European immigrant population that built it. Oh, there are three separate housing projects, the city's worst public schools, and the highest violent crime rate. The folks who built the neighborhood before WW II, and their descendants, all fled the area over a 20ish year period.
So now, let us say the Euclid Corridor project actually begins "gentrification" of the current urban blight. That is not colonialism. That's taking back what was taken by an invading/occupying force that was practicing scorched earth warfare.
That is also a Crock! I have many black good decent hard working own their own business as my friends. They never felt they were born a victim they do not live like a victim, and they sure as hell will not die as a victim.
They live in beautiful areas, own their own business, and never blame the white guy, for a gosh damn thing. They are successful, and want to live where it Is vibrant, and a good place to raise their families.
Look at the post I responded to. I also know and have as neighbors many who are decent, hard working, and coincidentally, black. I seldom notice skin color amongst my friends and neighbors. Such are not born nor raised with a victim mentality, and certainly do not live as victims finding oppression and injustice in every breath. They are educated - business owners, military officers, doctors - and live successful lives. I can't imagine them screaming like the people portrayed in the OP about being part of an "oppressed population". Those are the people I referred to as part of the victim mentality, refusing to change their station in life in favor of remaining "oppressed" and whining about it.
Ever heard of selling and making hundreds of thousands of dollars?
I have heard of property taxes because I pay them every month. Hoping your home does not increase in price so your property taxes do not go up is very short sighted.
I'll turn down my next raise so I don't have to pay higher taxes, sounds like a winning strategy to me.
Again, will you address what happens to these poor people? Are they magically not poor anymore? Magically not criminal-minded anymore? What happens to them?
They don't care. They got their nice home now in the hot city that's on the top 10 list.
Gentrification is nothing more than the late comers flocking to the hot spots and buying up what there is left.
Actually, gentrification is smart business for anyone with capital, same as venture capitalists who liquidate failing companies. Spot the diseased, decayed investment, pour capital into it to increase its value, collect profit.
Right now, Detroit is close to a dream investment. You can buy a city block for what an average modest single family home costs. But politics of oppression keep out smart investors because that city council and the Michigan state government are all pretty clear that Detroit must stay a bastion of liberal destruction, and anyone buying into Detroit must agree to the socialist schemes of Victimology. Get government out of the way, and Detroit would be turned around completely inside a decade. Hell, I'd leverage what capital I have to get in on it, but not with the government villainizing anyone trying to get an ROI out of it.
