That is one of my favorite things about when I lived in Portland, Or and I can't wait to move back there to get back to doing. I made it a point to often times buy things that were not only made in America, but specifically made in Portland, Oregon, Washington, or anywhere else in the Northwest. That way my money was going to help businesses in my own area grow.
Do we support our workers?
Would we rather get a better price by buying foreign made?
Are trade policies to blame?
Lots are to blame
Higher wages wanted in America
Cheaper labor overseas (why pay an American $35,000 a year to work in a factory when you can have 10 Indian or Chinese workers do the same in their home countries?)
Greed of Americans in general. They want items, but they don't want to pay the cost for items.
Why buy a $25 shirt made in America, when the same shirt made in China will cost you $10?
Laws in our country (mandatory minimum wages, insurance, unions, etc)
Quote:
What can we all do to support American companies?
Any ideas for great gifts that are made here?
The only way we can stop the overseas imports:
Penalize companies that send work overseas.
Give tax credits to build factories in America (but where do you build them? They create waste, and most of that waste is dumped into rivers and oceans)
Willingness of Americans to be paid lower than what a company could pay a worker overseas (yeah, that's NEVER going to happen)
CHANGE AMERICAN's lifestyles (yeah that's NEVER EVER giong to happen).
Well, did my part today. Needed a pack of pencils, and bought ones made in USA, wood sourced from CA. Ironically, they were slightly cheaper than one brand that's made in China
Tax breaks and tariffs are needed. You can't have free trade if the playing field isn't level. It's tilted against us for all of the right reasons. We are better than them. Congress has failed us.

the only problem with TAX breaks, is that it has to SOO good, to offset the salaries/wages to hire workers here.
When you can pay someone $3500 a year to make your product, and the fees to ship them back to the states, end up costing less than a hiring a worker here, what incentive does a company have to hire people here?
