EU Parliament Bans Menthol, Targets E-Cigarettes - ABC News

European lawmakers have approved sweeping new regulations to curb smoking, including limits on electronic cigarettes, bigger warnings on cigarette packs and a ban on menthol.

Tobacco lobbyists decry the regulation as disproportionate and limiting consumer freedom. European officials advocate the benefits to public health, saying smoking-related diseases cost about 25 billion euros ($34 billion) a year and around 700,000 lives across the 28-nation bloc

I'm torn on cigarettes. I hate them and they smell bad. I used to smoke socially, but after I had my first child I decided I wouldn't touch them anymore. I side with letting people decide if they want menthol cigarettes or not. The odd thing is that we know cigarettes cause cancer, yet they are still legal to purchase. If another product was proven to cause cancer, it would be off the shelf extremely quickly. I still side with letting people decide what they want to do with their own bodies.

In EU smoking related cost to society is $34 billion, but in US it is $100 billion per year, and an additional $100 in lost productivity.

When Government gets a hold on your care, you are then theirs to take care of how they see fit, as you are now an investment for them to collect revenue for them.

You come to the conclusion one day, that you are owned.... A piece of property.

It is just business. No hard feelings, right?

Smokers are everywhere across europe. Doesn't look like there is much of a concern. Banning menthol ciggys must have resulted from a meeting in Brussels just after they condemmed something somewhere, had dinner and a smoke.

So if menthol encourages smoking so does the lack of smoking bans.

Productivity projections are creative accounting designed to advance whatever they are selling. They are 'theoretical' and at most provide a relative comparison.

Laughable as the move to leagalize smoking pot is on the rise. Duh.. same unburned chemicals and radiation; same damage, same decrease in productivity.

You make a strong case for individual responsibility and the de-socializing of health care.

That was my first thought when I heard about this issue.

There is already a thriving black market in cigs in most western European countries.

No one buys them at the store and pays the tax.

Leftists sure are stupid.

To me government is like a large corporation... they simply don't care about YOU but they may change their mind (BUT NOT THEIR BEHAVIOR) if a large number of people disapproves of something... A corporation can fire you, mistreat you, and abuse as they like with little impunity... the government is a large corporation, why in the world would you want to be under a government that has certain ideological goals, especially one that contradicts your own... you may have an alignment with their goals now, but you really think that is going to last for you, your kids, your grandkids? Do you hate the future generations so much that you are willing to put them under a government with so much power like a corporation?
