I'm not trying to be sarcastic or confrontational. It just seems to me if you lived there, you'd have one, and would avoid this f waiting for the government to give you one, kind of scenario:
"Angry Israelis accused their leaders of failing to provide enough gas masks as thousands queued for emergency kits to protect them from a potential chemical weapons attack by Syria. There were chaotic scenes in Haifa, where an estimated four thousand people lined up from 6am outside the city's sports arena which had been designated as a main regional distribution centre after riots had broken out at small collecting points the day before. Dehydrated and without adequate shelter from a broiling sun, some shouted at police who strictly controlled entry to the distribution area in an effort to prevent a repeat of the previous day's mayhem."
Do they have a shelf life? Is that the part I'm missing? You know, their usability expires after so many years?
And that's the problem. Once used, the filter after a few hours get clogged. Then you're supposed to change the filter. Problem in Israel, due to numerous threats people use (activate) them and then when the threat is over just shelve it. Most don't understand that they have to have on-hand extra filters at all times. So now its been so long since the last threat that either the filters expired or no extra filters were kept or they simply threw them away. You can tell be people to be prepared, but many don't listen. There is no bottomless well of cash to keep 6 Million gas masks on hand at all times. People have to take responsibility for their own lives and not blame the gov't for their own mistakes.
How long can you wear a gas mask? These are not engineered for long-term living, and you could probably wear a gas mask for about three to four hours before having to change the filter.
I'm currently vacationing in Israel and my family, who always prepares for such situations, had a mask for me plus the 12 pack of sealed filters. In my home in the US, I still have the old masks that were handed out decades ago and would be useless today as the filters is no longer made.

yes they have a shelf life. The masks can vary and i don't know what they have, but they all have a shelf life. The face mask part does as well as the filters. Of the 2, filters in oem wrappers will last the longest, but they degrade.
Then filters need to be for a known gas, not just any or all gas.
This counts auto paint masks where isocyanates are used. That chemical comes from cyanide.
Shelf life is the major reason but if Syria has the state of the art nerve agents which Mr Putin might have given them masks are inrelvant since the aerosol droplets can be taken up by the skin and micron sized droplets (esentailly a fog droplet) have enough power to kill 50% of those exposed. What is frightening is a dose of 10-15 moles rougly a single droplet is enough for LD50 (LD Lethal Dose in 50% of all exposures) if inhaled.
Well, there have been zero poison gas attacks in Israeli history...so why should the government supply the entire population with gas masks that are likely ineffective to defend against modern chemical warfare?
Do preppers need socialist government handouts for their hobby?
Maybe the Israeli government doesn't really believe that they live under a threat of a chemical attack.
You reallze that the last time a lot of Jews got gassed was at places like Austwitz-Birkenau. You realize Israel won't respond in kind to a gas attack but bring the fires of hell to the guilty party using Strike Eagles, and the Jericho IRBMs .
