20% of Americans are still evangelical Christians. While that is a minority, its larger than the LGBT population and the percentage of Americans with postgraduate degrees. They aren't only the backwoods fringe nuts most people paint them to be. They are a large enough segment of the population that they can't be ignored come election season. However, the remaining 80% of Americans are becoming increasingly disgusted with their stances on social issues with each passing year. This coincides with the fact 80-90% of young people with college degrees are non-religious. There are many people who would like to vote Republican on fiscal issues but can't morally support a party that tries to restrict people's freedom to love who they choose or what they can do with their bodies. The problem is the GOP can't simply adopt liberal positions on these two issues and not lose the evangelical vote. Republicans rely on it like Democrats rely on the African-American vote. I realize most people here are very liberal, but realistically what can the GOP do to make itself relevant with a population that is increasingly at odds with evangelicals while still retaining their base? It seems like Republicans are in a "darned if we do darned if we don't" type of situation.

Evangelicals do pick their battles. Remember, how quickly Romney transformed from "a Mormon" to "a darling" at the whims of evangelical leadership?

Its what Jeezus would do, right?

Well, the GOP does control the House, so there is still a strong degree of relvency there. However, for them to gain substantial support from potential Democratic voters, they'd have to adhere to total moral decay and social deviancy...free open and porous borders (let anyone and anything in and delcare anyone who disputes otherwise as a 'racist')....bring back partial (and possible) late term abortions (life only begins when you receive your first WIC check), which staunch Dems have been fighting for years to bring back....allow anyone and anything to marry and redefine 'marriage' (even if it's you and your donky...love is love, right?) Higher taxes and the redistribution of income to fund more "programs" with cute little names (even if they do nothing but run up deficits)...and then maybe with a few apologies and some long nights of begging...just maybe some voters will take them into consideration.

I think that estimate is a bit on the high side.
