I guess France alone wouldn't mind fending itself from Russia.

You're a little weak on your history. You might want to re-think that. If anything, France and Russia would be allies.

Historically...

This is great news. The US needs to stop being the world's policeman. It's time to spend our money on rebuilding our neglected infrastructure and education systems.

Wonder if the White House got the news.....now we can get back to living for Americans and taking care of our own backyard.

Exactly how much money is the U.S. spending to defend France, do you think? It has the second largest active armed forces in OTAN (that's NATO to you), nearly equivalent to the next two largest European armies combined (UK & BRD). France has it's own Force de dissuasion which is the third-largest nuclear-weapons force in the world, a fleet of 180 vessels including the Charles De Gaulle carrier group, an Armee de l'Air with more than 600 aircraft including 16 fighter squadrons, and an army of 16 combat brigades, among them some of the finest combat formations in the world. And it receives no military aid (or for that matter, any other kind) from the United States at all - not a single centime.

Do try to get your facts straight.
